With a population of over 470,000 based on U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Atlanta is far and away the most populous city in Georgia and a magnet for jobs, companies, and industries. Corporations with headquarters in metro Atlanta include Delta Air Lines, Coca-Cola, UPS, and The Home Depot. Overall, Atlanta ranks fourth in the number of Fortune 500 companies with headquarters in the city limits.
Nearly 55,000 students attend Atlanta Public Schools, which is organized into nine high school clusters. Within each cluster, all students in a specific elementary school attend the same middle school, and students in that middle school advance to the same high school.
The City of Atlanta has officially defined 242 neighborhoods. Most people, however, refer to larger areas such as Midtown, Downtown, and Buckhead. Another commonly used designation is ITP, which refers to all of Atlanta and parts of DeKalb and Fulton counties “inside the perimeter” of Interstate 285. OTP, or “outside the perimeter,” is used to describe Atlanta suburbs.
